Tuesday night usually signifies a 5pm knock of followed by a quick dinner and maybe a GoGo dance class if I’m motivated enough. According to Australia Post, Tuesday is the day that more personal letters and gift cards are delivered. This Tuesday evening was quite different for my house mate and I, it felt more like a Friday night, we both came home from work, had dinner, showered and redressed up, to go out to Billboard (in Melbourne city) for The Breeders show.
The crowd that The Breeders attract are a diverse collection of people. Fans who have followed them for many years, and to quote one girl standing next to me “I’ve waited fifteen fucking years for this! YEAH!” Fans like myself, I must confess, who are only relatively recent converts to the talented foursome and a screaming variety of people in between. Evidently used to this, The Breeders managed to cater for all of us, putting on a sold out action packed show.
When we arrived the four Melbournian men who are Gaslight Radio, were on stage performing a few familiar hits and warming up the crowd as the room swelled to capacity. Having my chunky camera and a little ‘photographer’ sticker, I managed to secure a pretty awesome spot right near the front. So the Experimental, Psychedelic Rock rattled through me like an excited shiver. Before long the curtains fell, Gaslight Radio finished off and the resident DJ spun a few tunes to keep us entertained.
Before the curtains are even raised again, the audience was treated to Jose Medeles on the drums. Then Mando Lopez joins in on the bass, Kelley Deal on the guitar, strummed in next, and then the curtain rose and Kim Deal galloped onto stage true rock star style. A couple of others joined them on stage for various songs during the night.
Kim Deal is a hysterical and very talented entertainer, providing a number of hilarious anecdotes through out the night. The Breeders put on an eclectic night of music as they showcased their new album Mountain Battles, as well as some favourites to satisfy the older fans. The older music defiantly being the most energetic times of the night. Songs like Happiness is a Warm Gun had everyone in a trance listening, singing along and dancing in a unique sync.
When twin sisters with strong, yet raspy voices like Kim and Kelley’s it is hard not to feel like you are connecting with something bigger and deeper into the realm of music. When I looked around behind me I realised I wouldn’t be able to do much more than just look (I certainly could move due to mass of people surging from the top tier of the venue) my feelings were confirmed with the smiles plastered on everyone’s face.
