‘Three scruffy punks, with nice shoes, daring to push the envelope and challenge the mainstream, armed with shitty broken equipment... ready to take on the world…’
That was how Gerling described themselves in mid-2003 shortly after completing their third album BadBlood!!!
Seven weeks in Ethan’s North Hollywood studio armed with his collection of analogue history, vintage instrumentation and 16-track desk has seen the foursome produce the most mature and fully realized Gerling album yet. Ethan was adamant that he not be sent any previous Gerling material – he didn’t want it to influence his ideas but he was more than happy to step into the 21st century by hiring 8 extra digital tracks… Gerling is Gerling after all....
4 is, unsurprisingly enough, the fourth full length album from Gerling and it sees them follow the same path as they have after each of the first three albums – another new direction. Sure, it combines Gerling’s love of electro and sequencing with live instruments but a quick listen to the first two tracks that have been made available from 4 (Turning The Screws & Good Timing) reveals a stronger and more even pop sensibility with those famous massive Gerling hooks that will certainly be commanding attention in 2006 and beyond. Dig a little deeper into the album and some heavily rhythmic gems (Gator and Big Game) leap out and even a couple of acoustic tracks… Gigantic, anthemic choruses? Just about every other track of course…
Gerling. Still three scruffy punks with nice shoes, but in 2006 about to break into the mainstream and take over the world…..
