Produced, mixed and engineered by Shane O’Mara and out again on The ABC label thru Warner, one gets the feeling The Audreys are harvesting music’s answer to the ‘chick-flick’ or the virtual soundtrack to an as yet, unwritten soap. With singer Taasha Coates the main jewel in their crown, the spotlight seems to be shifting towards her story telling voice more than anything. And it seems the band is being restrained to a level that - more so now than ever – is in keeping with its girly name. When all is said and done, this is a country-folk girly girl’s record.
Even when rock guitars weave their way into Lay Me Down, or the male vocal attachment helps lift the title track, they’re all but completely testosterone-free. By the time we hit the slightly irritating, effeminately melancholy Anchor, the next time I hear something this Regina Spektor-like I almost wanna punch her in the keys. Later when Coates achingly repeats the chorus of Sally & the Preacher, which goes along the lines of “…found a place” it sounds more like “Fountain Lakes”. Ouch. Look at moi…
Meanwhile Closing Time and Small Things show us that wistfully tiptoeing through the tulips can be great, while closing epic More to a Sinner, Head So Heavy and Paradise City are further highlights. As for the artwork it’s by the debaser crew whom have decorated outstanding records by Kev Carmody and the like.
When the Flood Comes is a very decent release but even though this is The Audreys, to sum it up in ABC television terminology I might have preferred something with ‘double the fist’. Better file this under T&B, for tea and biscuits.
