I've never been a huge fan of Australian hip-hop. That being said, Muph & Plutonic have always stood out to me as one of the few Aussie hip-hop groups that transcend the 'Aussie' part of that label and just make damn good music regardless of the accent (which generally tends to irritate).
DJ Muphin and Plutonic Lab have been in partnership for around 5 years now, and it shows. Muph's smooth tone and great flow works perfectly with Plutonic's production on Size of the Soul, the first single from their eagerly anticipated LP And Then Tomorrow Came. Muph's rapping and Plutonic's work in the sound booth on the track are great, and most notably – they're great together. While this isn't party-rap or even a catchy and funny single of the Hilltop Hoods oeuvre, it is a genuinely good song and it bodes well for the upcoming album.
The record needle scratchiness of the intro is a fairly tired gimmick, but as a vinyl-phile myself I can't say I hate it (and it does go hand-in-hand with the singles slipcase artwork). The beat is pure Plutonic and does what it should; gives the song the flow and tempo that is required. Along with the beat there are some phaser effects that could have been toned down in the mix a little, but generally work well. My personal favourite aspect of this song, along with Muph's lyrics, are the horns. A hip-hop song with a horn section can do no wrong by me.
This is a quality cut from two of Australia's premiere hip-hop artists, and it is bound to generate excitement for the duo's soon-to-be-released album.
