The Vines are back and with a BAM! After the disruptions of break-ups, break-downs and other random moments over the last few years, Melodia, their 4th album, shows that it is all in the past and they are on the road again showing what made them one of Australia’s rock favourites.

Opening track Get Out seems to be the sequel to 2002’s Get Free (not just in name!). This is a fantastic opening track that jumps off the CD and provides a powerful opening, rocking out to remind us of who The Vines really are.

A.S.III and Orange Amber are more relaxed ballad style tracks. A more pop-based style, with a tinge of a Beatles influence. As much as many will see this as a step away from The Vines normal, I like it and feel it gives the album a sense of balance and adds value to what we consider to be true Vines tracks.

The return is completed with Scream and She is Gone bringing back the rocking sounds of The Vines. Melodia was recorded in Los Angeles with producer Rob Schnapf (Beck, Elliott Smith), who also worked on The Vines' first two albums.

Highlight of the album is He’s a Rocker, the first single off the album. It has listeners singing along on the first listen. A great bass line threads through the track and a track that will be 2008’s equivalent success of Get Free.

Simply to sum it up, as Craig Nicholl’s sings to us in He’s a Rocker

Once there was a young man
No one could understand
Wasting time every day
He got nothin' to say
All he ever playin' is that rock n roll music
rock n roll music yeah
all he ever wanted was a reason to do it
reason to do it yeah

And Craig right back at you; you have a reason to do it, keep playin that rock n roll music - We love it!

Melodia may not have the impact of Highly Evolved, but it has it’s place up there with it and Vines fans will be very pleased to see them back and kicking it once again.
