» Scary Kids Scaring Kids - Meat and Greet - January 21, 2008

You might think that 3 months on the road, playing a show almost every night, and writing as much as you can in your spare time, would eventually suck the life out of you but that is exactly what Scary Kids Scaring Kids are doing and the band couldn’t be stronger.
When asked about touring, Pouyan, Keyboardist of Scary Kids Scaring Kids is honest. “It’s always hard, it’s always a challenge, but I love to travel and I think it is harder to stay in one place for a very long time than it is to be on the road…It becomes a routine, but you get settled at home and all of a sudden you realize I’m leaving for tour again in a few days and it kind of hits.”
Priding himself on a tight energetic show he reflects, “I’m usually nervous up until the first show of every tour; I don’t know how it’s going to go and I don’t know how the kids are going to react, but after the first show everything kind of feels natural.”
But to kill show jitters the athletic keyboardist has a few tricks up his sleeve “I have to do 10 pushup hand stands before I go on; its good luck, a good friend of mine from out of the band holds my feet…DJ unloads the gear out the trailer for the rest of the band and loads it onto the stage for us before we play. But I think we’ve made that his ritual” He laughs.
Their tour schedule, which they are only three days into, is grueling. Spanning three months, two countries, 26 cities and 43 shows, will take them across the US on the Jebediah Clothing Vs. Tour with Haste the Day and then finally Down Under to join the Soundwave tour in February. It’s the bands first time to Australia and even though Pouyan isn’t a huge fan of eating meat he tells me “My yearn for experience can over come me wanting to eat kangaroo meat.” As something he’s looking forward to during their brief stay.
Soundwave will bring together a mix of bands from barely known to superstardom and the event not just proves exciting for the fans but for the bands that will be involved as they have a chance to meet some of the musicians that they themselves admire. For SKSK that band is Incubus. “I really respect musicians that have stayed true to their own sound, and it’s what they love to play and have made a great deal of success doing it. I think Incubus definitely has maintained the respect and integrity while winning many fans over and just being themselves.” Pouyan explains.
As well as the festival, SKSK will also be playing side shows in Melbourne and Sydney with new tour buddies Thursday and Saosin “We know some of the Saosin guys from the past growing up on the same west coast of the US so we know those guys are great guys and we’re excited to see them and all that. But we’ve never played with Thursday before and that’s going to be quite an honor.”
Watch out for their show when they hit your town as you’ll certainly be entertained with the bands crazy antics. Pouyan reflects on his most memorable show which has me in fits of laughter on the end of the phone and all sense of maintaining professionalism goes out the window. “We were playing small stage on warped tour, and a lot of the girls on warped tour and the guys on warped tour are like 13 14 and 18 and one night my pants ripped open and I don’t wear underwear, because it’s much more comfortable, I sweat a lot. And all my business just fell out ‘cause my pants ripped right at the Bottom and I was playing with my testicles just kind of hanging and it was pretty memorable, I had to take my shirt off and wrap it around myself like a diaper.”
All fun and games aside my conversation began to evolve and I started to understand how serious this band was about their music. Maintaining a strong work ethic whilst on tour, writing has already begun for a third album after only just releasing their second, self titled album in August last year.
Being a positive influence and connecting with their fans are two of the most important things to the band and their longing to entertain is what the band thrives on.
When talking about their new album SKSK hope to earn a few more fans whilst on tour but are truly grateful for the old fans that have stuck by them. “I just hope a lot of people connect to it and see it as a progression that we feel it is musically for us…We’re going to make the music we love to make and hopefully it succeeds but if it doesn’t we can’t be blamed because it’s what we have in us.”
You can catch Scary Kids Scaring Kids on February 23rd Soundwave Brisbane, 24th Soundwave Sydney, 29th Soundwave Melbourne, March 1st Soundwave Adelaide, 3rd Soundwave Perth and side shows with Thursday and Saosin- Feb. 27th The Forum Sydney. Feb 28th the Corner Melbourne.
