Outrageous keyboardist Pouyan Afkary from Scary Kids Scaring Kids was more than willing to discuss business, as well as random observations on the difference between Australia and the US.

With their first headlining Australian tour due to commence on the 21st of this month in Brisbane, Afkary explains what fans have to look forward to. “We have a hell of a good time up [on stage]. We love what we do. We put as much energy as we can into our live set. We have a very sturdy following in the States because of our live shows. They come, we win them over and they come back.”

To prove how wild their shows can get Afkary depicts a recent show on Halloween that got particularly rowdy, so much so that by the end of the concert he was left wearing nothing more than his underwear. In the US they go nuts during Halloween so I felt the need to make the pointless statement “We don’t really do Halloween in Australia” which always seems to fascinate Americans. “Really? Wow that’s amazing. It’s like summer over there isn’t it? That’s crazy!” he exclaims.

Chit-chat aside, Afkary graciously offered up two stories about Haste The Day and Halifax who will be SKSK’s support acts whilst in Australia. He starts out by saying “Haste The Day – their a Christian band so they don’t really drink on the road and I don’t know if they would appreciate this story but....” which would immediately make any journalist halt to attention. In short he elaborates on a past tour where the two bands played different board games , like Sorry! and Uno, every night and whichever band won the most games by the end of the tour was crowned the winner. SKSK won the final game of Sorry! so the losers, Haste The Day, were forced to put their testicals in the freezing cold snow outside as unfortunately for them the tour took place in the middle of winter.

Next is the rather mischievous story about Halifax back when previous lead singer Mike Hanau was still in the band. “There’s this place in California called Bakersfield and these women came out to a festival we were playing and they were total cougars. They were giving people drinks and showing their new fake boobs to everybody and asking them to feel them.” Afkary decided to play a prank on Halifax by luring them to the bar where the ‘cougars’ where. Once there Hanau and his fellow band mates couldn’t escape, and where later seen being practically forced into a nearby car by the sex hungry desperate housewives.

No doubt Scary Kids Scaring Kids will have plenty more intriguing stories to tell after their four date tour of Australia. Directly after the concerts, Afkary informs me that the band will go back to the US to start focusing on writing songs for the next SKSK album which they are set to record in February/March 2009.
