The Dwarf had a quick chat (a chatette, you might say) with David Best, singer/guitarist for Brighton rock-tronica act Fujiya & Miyagi on their new record, Aphex Twin and the life and death of electronic music.

What kind of non-musical influences do you have?

The obvious ones like books and films. Also whatever is around me whether it be people or inanimate objects.

Electronic music has seen a lot of changes over the years- where to from here?

I think it will go one of two ways. Either music will become even more electronic based as it threatened to do around the release of windowlicker, or the more traditional factions of the media and the music industry as a whole will push the skinny jeaned guitar bands even more to prevent music from becoming too interesting.

The UK press is notorious for being quite quick to jump on trends then dump them just as fast- how do you combat the finicky press?

I think you must not take the good nor the bad too seriously. There are a few magazines and writers I respect but on the whole I’m more interested in my friends liking our records than I am in people who don’t know us. Having said that I’ve been told that the UK press has been pretty positive.

What was the process of making the latest record like?

It was made in a shorter time period than Transparent Things, but within that period we had more time if that makes any sense. A lot of the songs were written straight after the last record which is probably why there are vague similarities between the two. However we tried to do different types of songs like Goosebumps and Pickpocket. I’m proud of the record, its good.

I see you like Aphex Twin. The Come to Daddy video scares the shit out of me. How about you?

Yep. It’s great but I don’t want to watch it late at night.

Any plans to come to Australia?

Yes. We should be coming over there in February next year. It will be nice to escape the British winter.

Tell us a joke.

Guess who I bumped into at Specsavers?

Everyone.

Famous last words?

We are trying our best.
