Lovers Electric - Whatever You Want (Album)
When this album arrived on my desk I was met with a certain sense of excited anticipation. Not because I was looking forward to this release, in fact up until that moment I had heard of neither the band nor the album.
The reason for my anticipation was because the album was packaged in a simple white cardboard sleeve with the words Lovers Electric Album - which on further investigation turned out to be called Whatever You Want. I was immediately taken back to the mid 90’s and the inherent coolness associated with ‘white label’ releases. Would this be the next big thing? Just who is Lovers Electric? I was definitely curious.
Turns out Lovers Electric are a duo from Adelaide by way of the UK and back again and their album is a big, bold keyboard infused tribute to early 90’s dance rock.
While this kind of music isn’t usually my cup of tea, the frenetic energy Lovers Electricdelivers on this album held my attention longer than most bands of this genre.
The first single of the album, Honey is testament to this – an above average dance rock number about the trials and tribulations of relationship breakups. There is a certain urgency here that presents itself throughout the album – coming mostly from the guitarists Johnny Marr riffage (you can just imagine him strutting around the studio while playing).
While the album never veers too far from this territory apart from the Portishead trip hop inspired title track), and does for this listener tend to get a bit samey, there his hit after potential hit here, the least of which not being the aforementioned Honeythe album’s opener and the ridiculously catchy Start Again, and the sweetly optimistic Love Waits.
There is also a pop glossiness and certain techno-credibility here thanks to ex- Pop Will Eat Itself-er Fuzz Townsend at the desks.
The husband and wife team of Eden Boucher and David Turley that make up Lovers Electriccertainly know how to write hook-laden catchy pop songs that have a little more substance to them than most of today’s top 40 disposable pop.
So, will Lovers Electric be then next big thing? Only time will tell, but if Whatever You Want is anything to go by it is definitely possible.
