the e.l.f vitriol

Sometime in last year, Sydney indie hip-hop group bluejuice created a fuss with Vitriol, a boppy angst ridden track that was popular on Triple J and earned the group 11th place on the Hottest 100 list. Now it seems they are happy to suck the life out of this success by lending it to friends to play with. Enter The E.L.F.

While indie electro/rock act, Gerling have parted ways temporarily, frontman Darren Cross has forged ahead with his solo aspirations. Under the pseudonym The E.L.F, his first effort Stevie Nicks Hearts was released earlier this year and he’s been tinkering with remixes while working on his first album. His one-man with a laptop electronic style sounds similar to Gerling’s work in its curiosity and craziness but without the production dollars behind it. Point in case; he made a film clip for $12! Beat that, inflation!

Tweaking here, twiddling there and looping in-between, The E.L.F has taken Vitriol and added a little bit of acid spice to the mix. Fundamentally the song is still the same; all the lyrics are there and the beat is the same (just a little faster). It’s basically a dancier version of the original. As such, it’s dull to talk about.

The most important aspect of this remix is The E.L.F and how, with every solo piece of work he does, he pushes himself a little further from Gerling. Maybe Cross just wants to spread his creative wings before calling his former band-members back for more, or maybe the ship has already sailed. Cue the Twighlight Zone intro music please.
