The Beautiful Girls are one of those bands that seemed to have passed this reviewer by. Not out of any inherent prejudicial dislike of the band, mind you. I guess it was more of a case that I just never got around to them. So I was quite interested to listen to Under a Southern Sky, the latest single from the band’s third long player, Ziggurats.
Under a Southern Sky, as the title suggests, is a tribute to all things Australian – from “…beach towels laid out on the shore” to “…the desert cracks under the sun.” Singer Mat McHugh is definitely passionate about this wide brown land we call Australia.
Musically, this is far from the labels of roots music and comparisons to Xavier Rudd et al. This is classic upbeat Aussie rock at its finest. It’s almost as if the band were paying tribute to Australia musically, with definite nods to bands like Midnight Oil, Goanna, Icehouse (Great Southern Land) and the Sunnyboys.
Under a Southern Sky is a solid effort that has definitely piqued my interest in the Beautiful Girls.
