uncut white noise EP

Uncut White Noise’s name actually gives you a pretty good indication of what their music is like. Not that there is no music and that it is just white noise; no, that’d just be stupid. The self-titled EP is the debut offering from the Melbourne-based 5-piece. The album cover features a movie reel with little images of the band in it, overlaid on fax paper smeared with ink paper. Blunt and unpretentious. I like it.

Uncut White Noise play loud, fast punk rock, with some metal influences beyond the simple distortion. Like the album cover, it is blunt and unpretentious; rather than trying to inspire you, make you cry, or change your life, it’s about simply having a good time. And it works quite well – I found myself nodding along before I realised what I was doing. And this isn’t to say the tracks can’t be pretty or moving either; check out the intro to My Pal to see what I mean.

There are 5 songs on the EP; Controlling, Song In My Head, Brand New Baby, 2 Bad If It’s 2 Loud (tephanis’ note to all aspiring song writers; PLEASE don’t put txt or d00dspeak in song names – it was never cool!) and My Pal. They are relatively short tracks in true punk style, with the average length being 2.36 minutes. The stand out for me was Brand New Baby. Driven by repeated guitars and mantra-style vocals, it has some nice winding guitars in there, and the simplicity is pleasing. Plus the vocal “She loves me. I don’t care” is hilarious. The other notable track is the afore-mentioned My Pal, and opener Controlling isn’t too bad either.

If you like simple, unpretentious heavier rock beats, or perhaps miss the Sex Pistols or Ramones a little too much, or even just want to see if an Aussie punk band is possible, then check out Uncut White Noise. Go. Go now.
