Kid Confucius

According to their video blogs, it is their third album, but I’m a first time listener. Where the heck have I been?! With such a large number of members how could I have missed Kid Confucius?

They say first impressions are everything and due to my ignorance on their past releases I credit their current single Darling, I Need Ya for grabbing my attention and had me rushing to grab the record for review. This track is my absolute favourite in this record. I had had the pleasure of owning this song through the iTunes giveaway so this track has gotten more spin than the rest and what a way to introduce a band. If you think their first single Good Luck was one for the dance floor, then this one will just get you dancing wherever you happen to be standing and who can stop anyone joining "hi ya la la" that is going in the background?

According to all the press releases, I am not the only one new to this band. They have a new guitarist on board (James Manson) and their first single, Good Luck is one he co-wrote with the band. Great to see them welcoming their new member with open arms. He also holds a killer solo in my favourite track so you guys should listen out for that.

A band that doesn’t take themselves too seriously, describing themselves as Hardcore / Screamo / Children on their MySpace (I’m thinking it’s actually more Funk Rock) so it is no surprise that their title track The Let Go tells an anecdote regarding kissing a parking office on the lips while issuing a ticket. Quite an amusing track indeed.

By the fifth track I find myself drumming in the air and if they had a plan I believe it was to keep me bopping to upbeat pop tracks at the very beginning and keep me entertained with their unique drum accents. They really do like their stop start drum breaks and in Big Black Cloud they must’ve known I caught up with their plan as they swapped it over to the bass line.

But this consistent formula isn’t a problem and it is due to the overdubs that distract you from that fact. Special mentions go to their “musical Godfather” Tony Buchen and Benn Chapman for the icing on the cake with their horn arrangements.

Their slowest track, Caroline is placed right in the middle of the record and while it saddens me to slow down on this vivacious record, “It was chemistry from day one”. It is quite rare for me to stop listening musically pay attention lyrically so top marks for achieving that feat.

Sing a song... on a Monday... sing a song on a Tuesday too” I like these guys, welcoming everyone to sing along and creating tunes that will get you dancing during their shows. Don’t take things to seriously- Fool Around get The Let Go.
