Wednesday 13 - Skeletons (Album)
Wednesday 13 is a multi-instrumentalist demon spawn with the complete intention of eating you brains and grinding your organs… not necessarily in that order. The 2008 album, Skeletons, is possibly the best piece of punk horror, industrial zombie rock I have ever had the squeamish displeasure of listening to.
As you have probably guessed, the album draws deep inspiration from classic 20th century horror films and is the solo effort by front man of the currently on hiatus Murderdolls. From track one, Scream Baby Scream, you begin to get a clear picture of what this artist is going for with opening lyrics like “A world beyond your wildest screams, Ghosts and goblins, Spooks and creeps, Welcome to the creature feature, Number 13”. After this, Skeletons just gets better and bloodier. Every track grinds through dirty riffs, zombie rasped screams and relentless drums leaving the listening aching for more. It would be an injustice to choose just one as a stand out track.
The lyrics on this record are so deliciously and ghoulishly awesome. I mean with gems like "I left a trail from Hollywood to hell" or "It's either sex or the saw", you really can’t lose. One song even starts with "A family that slays together, stays together’" then goes on to tell a story about an All American Massacre, which is aptly the song title. Lyrically, this is what Alice Cooper would be doing in 2008 if he was many years younger.
I scoured this album at length for any kind of flaw, or at least something I feel could be done better to absolutely no avail. I literally threw this record in my stereo expecting a horror theatrical masterpiece and it delivered. Anyone appreciating music or zombies will dig this record.
