A gentle, yet brooding melodic intro steadily looms into a slamming, powerful trademark metal riff, and then the majestic vocals of Clint Boge’s break into the fray. Along with the atmospheric production and a powerful chorus, The Butterfly Effect's third single from Imago, 'Reach' is a favourite with fans and listeners and has proved electric in live shows.
The single features fantastic live audio and video footage of the songs 'Always' and 'Gone' from The Metro, Sydney in 2006. However the most exciting aspect of this enhanced CD single, is the bands first and ONLY ever acoustic recording – of the second single from Imago, 'Gone'. For a band who made a name for themselves in the Australian metal industry with their hard hitting tracks, no-one could expect them to release an acoustic song – not even Guitarist Kurt Goedhart! I interviewed Kurt late last year for thedwarf and these were his views on the acoustic track:
“…you know, I guess some people wanna do these things… I don’t. I think it was kinda gay. I don’t think we’re really well represented by that sorta business, it’s not really what we’re all about… but you know the chicks dig it, so I guess its all right!”
I was only expecting this song to consist of just one acoustic guitar and the vocals, as is usually standard for most acoustic tracks, however the whole band was involved. The duplicate guitars created intricate harmonies to compliment the operatic vocals of Boge.
When I first heard this track, I found myself lying down on the ground, staring up at the ceiling and thinking of my own life in relation to the song; reminiscing about those who have ‘gone’. I think it is truly the best way to listen to this particular track, just to let yourself go and allow the song to come to life. The track is such a moving rendition, it may even make you cry.
Not that I cried. Really.
