There is a definite change of mood on this, Epicure’s 5th studio album. Albeit not a major mood change, it is still there, as this Victorian quintet seems to have brightened up a little; seen the happier side of life you might say.
Postcards From A Ghost is both the new album’s title and a line from the first single Cobra Kisses, a single chosen by the fans on the bands’ MySpace website (Landslide being the other possible choice).
The thirteen ‘postcards’ range in mood from somber and sorrowful (something Epicure fans know all too well {and in my case, love} from at least the bands’ previous two albums) to something a little bit more upbeat and cheery. I suppose there are limits to the amount of sorrow one person can experience. Grief is not a bottomless pit it seems.
For those that are already familiar with this band the sound of this album will be nothing new to you. The lyrics have changed, the sound remains the same. The tones of pedal steel guitar, Hammond organ, mellow percussion and emotion-stricken vocals are a staple of Epicure. It’s atmospheric music; ambient alternative as my iPod tells me.
I do like Postcards From A Ghost. Not as much as Epicure’s previous two albums but after a few more listens (reviewing is such a rapid process) I’m sure it will grow on me some more. Keep an ear out for Snakes And Foxes, Soft Place To Fall and Landslide (my choice for first single!).
