Recloose - Perfect Timing (Album)
Recloose, otherwise known as Matthew Chicoine and based in New Zealand is a funk/beats musician who’s been doing the rounds on the international club scene for over a decade now. His latest release, Perfect Timing, is set to continue this trend.
The sum total of Perfect Timing, this reviewer felt, was that it was an intriguing, cleverly crafted combination of various instruments and sounds and, although it is of a musical persuasion that won’t appeal to everyone, fans of this style will be wholly satisfied.
Opening track Catch a Leaf is a soulful number that is a fair indication of where the rest of the album is headed. It treads a fine line between a rhythmic floor-filler and chilled-out lounge music. Some will move with it, others are more likely to shuffle awkwardly and try to get their head around the exquisite pacing. Robop ups the tempo ever-so-slightly, leading into Can It Be, which continues this trend (albeit with slightly irritating vocals). The album cleverly builds pace so that as the album reaches its midway mark, the listener’s attention has well and truly been caught
The album has only a few slight missteps – Solomon’s Alive appears to be aiming for an infusion of jazz, funk and dance, but ends up sounding scattered and uneven, which, although at times something that works well, doesn’t hear.
Ultimately, fans of beats and funk-influenced sounds will find plenty to offer here. For everyone else, it will be enough of a struggle to simply ‘get’ what Recloose is all about.
