The Hardons - Most People Are Nicer Than Us

Last year The Hard-Ons released their superb album Most People are a Waste of Time that was an impressive masterpiece of splendid power-pop. It was not really heavy what so ever. But the band said after releasing Most People are a Waste of Time that their next album will be all thrash hardcore and metal and well, that was not a lie, they actually did it.

When I first placed the interesting pink and purple disk that is The Hard-Ons latest efforts Most People Are Nicer Than Us in to my player I thought to myself “Oh, great, they have sent me the wrong CD”, but I was wrong. This was none other than The Hard-Ons I was listening to. As the first track 'Carrot Top' begun I tried to keep an open mind on this strange change in direction.

One thing that hasn’t changed from their previous releases is their great song names and lyrics. Most People are Nicer than us features the aptly named songs ‘Being Broke is Fucked’, ‘Does That Come in Size Aquaman?’, ‘Making Money From Goths is Easy’ and the straightforward title ‘Dance Parties = Dickhead Fest’.

I gave the whole album a listen through and went away feeling a little disappointed in what I had heard. They have almost pulled it off, but its just not there for me. I thought I’ll give it another chance and a few more listens. I ending up finding a few songs I enjoyed.

‘Punky, No-No’ is a two minute track that is a lot more rock influenced compared to the rest of the album and is the stand out song for me. Often the vocals remind me of The Bronx and even Wes Eisold at times.

Most People Are Nicer Than Us is defiantly one of those fungal albums, slowly grow on you until you just have to accept it and end up finding some pros about the whole situation. True fans of The Hard-Ons will more than likely enjoy this album and completely understand that this band is truly one of a kind.
