What do they put in Tasmanian water and where can I obtain some? No really, so many amazingly talented musicians have emerged from the place that I can only assume that there is some magical potion being fed to them from birth. The Scientists of Modern Music further support this theory of mine with the release of Electronic Sunset, a record that fuses all the electronic and rock elements that we expect from that 'scene' astonishingly well. It is synth and vocoder heaven, but catchy and well-written enough enough to make the 'robot rock' cheese acceptable.
Right from opener Easy I am bouncing about in my desk chair and by the third track Technology Illiterate I am taking breaks from typing this to jump about my room, waving my hands in the air and upsetting my slumbering cats. The Theremin sounding synth lines in the title track inspire feelings akin to rolling around a grassy knoll watching a laser show. In fact, most of this record makes you wish you were in a field with thousands of excited punters and flashing lights.
They've already got some impressive live notches on the belt as well (First band to play both VIC and TAS Falls Festivals, Supports for The Galvatrons and Trans Am, etc) and with good reason, this material translates into a live set spectacularly well. Delivering a vibe that can be picked up on the two bonus live tracks (recorded at Falls Festival 07) that are included on this release.
Another bonus are the remixes of Easy, especially the Mr Miyagi remix which gives the track a bigger sound than it already had and would no doubt go down a treat in the clubs.
Whilst The Scientists of Modern Music may not be at the forefront of the 'electronic music that indie kids lap up' scene, they definitely bring something special and new with them and Electronic Sunset is a very promising introduction from this young Tasmanian duo.
